Music has always been important to me. I love to listen to music when I’m writing, reading, sitting in the car or chilling in my room; not a day goes by when I haven’t listened to my favourite songs. These can be brand new tracks or songs I’ve been obsessed with for years. In this blog post I’ll share 10 of my current favourite songs with you and tell you something about them. Enjoy reading (and listening)!
1. JC Stewart – Break My Heart
I discovered JC Stewart, a Northern Irish singer, songwriter and musician, back in 2019 when he just released his single ‘Bones’ at the beginning of the summer. Since then I’ve been listening to his discography and his music is sooo good. I feel like he’s a very underrated artist so I needed to share his brand new single ‘Break My Heart’ with you. He co-wrote it with Niall Horan (yes, that guy from One Direction) and if you pay enough attention to the backing vocals, you can also hear Horan’s voice on the song.
“Break My Heart is big, fast and fun,” says JC. “It’s about someone who can catch you so off guard that they can ruin a city for you and tear your life apart. But sometimes that can be addicting.”
“If you’re gonna break my heart then do it right
Don’t you leave me hanging on like the last time
Break my heart, then do it right
Oh, it’s gonna burn witut you.”
2. Taylor Swift – right where you left me
While 2020 was one hell of a year for most of us, Taylor Swift definitely had a wonderful time with lots of studio sessions. She released not one but two new studio albums and broke 17 different records. “right where you left me” is actually a bonus track on her Evermore album, which came out last month. The songs were only available on the physical version but she finally shared it on all her platforms!
Taylor Swift sings about how she is stuck in the past, at a definitive time in her life, unable to move on. She is lost in her own world. Why? Because she lost something near and dear to her.
“Friends break up, friends get married
Strangers get born, strangers get buried
Trends change, rumors fly through new skies
But I’m right where you left me.”
3. Taylor Swift – it’s time to go
Just like the song above, is “its time to go” a bonus track on Taylor Swift‘s 9th studio album Evermore. Through the song, Swift intertwines themes of a relationship gone south and her feud with Big Machine Record. In a sense, both relationships have similar traits. And both fallouts broke a little part of her soul.
“Sometimes giving up is the strong thing
Sometimes to run is the brave thing
Sometimes walking out is the one thing
That will find you the right thing.”
4. Why Don’t We – Slown Down
On the 15th of January, Why Don’t We will release their sophomore studio album The Good Times and The Bad Ones. The members of the boy band wrote and produced all the songs of this album themselves, for the first time.
In order to tease their fans a bit, they released some songs including ‘Slow Down’. The song captures the emotions of a long-distance relationship and how distance creates clouds of doubt between the lovers. The entire song is dedicated to the cry of the heart of two people who have been forced to distance themselves. It’s already one of my favorites so I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album later this week!!
“I think we need a little California ’cation
We took a shot at this, but maybe we’re too wasted
It’s hard to swallow, but I know we gotta chase it.”
5) Olivia Rodrigo – Drivers License
Olivia Rodrigo is one of the stars of Disney+’s hit show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series but I discovered her last Friday when she released her debut single “Drivers License”. The song cherishes in its obvious Taylor Swift influence as Olivia works her way through a melancholic narrative of betrayal. With her debut single, Olivia captures the layers of teenage emotions in the face of crumbling romance without sounding like she’s relaying experiences that aren’t hers. In my opnion “Drivers License” is a damn good pop song and I’ve already had it on repeat for hours.
Olivia Rodrigo seems to be filled with promise and I honestly can’t wait to hear more from her. I’m a fan now!
“How you could be so okay now that I’m gone
Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me
‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street.”
6. Harry Styles – Treat People With Kindness
2021 is already better than 2020 because Harry Styles decided to release the final music video off his album Fine Line for single ‘Treat People With Kindness’ , on the first day of the year. It was a wonderful suprise to wake up to. And in case you’re wondering, yes I’ve been trying to learn this dance…
Treat People With Kindness became something of a slogan for Styles during his arena tour in 2018, and what started as a message on a badge on his guitar strap, quickly caught on. The song is a big, brassy gospel sing-along and is the penultimate track on the album. “Small changes end up making a big difference,” Harry said. “It’s about being a lot nicer to each other rather than, ‘Don’t do this, or don’t do that, not this yes that.’ It’s just saying, ‘Treat people with kindness,’ you know.”
“Maybe we can
Find a place to feel good
And we can treat people with kindness.”
7. ZAYN – Vibez
Zayn’s new single ‘Vibez’ definitely has some good vibes! This dreamy and slightly sexy song about love is the second single from his upcoming album Nobody Is Listening. He already released ‘Better’ in September. Thankfully he hasn’t created another 29 track record unlike ‘Icarus Falls’, and instead has decided to deliver a more compact 11 track body of work.
Earlier Zayn said that the album is going to be personal, possibly because of his new role as father. ‘Vibez’ sets the foundations for what this record will be which is another exploration into his moody RNB soundscape.
“Don’t keep me waiting
I’ve been waiting all night to get closer
And you already know I got it for you
You know the vibes.”
8. Miley Cyrus – Angels Like You
I’ve always been a fan of Miley Cyrus‘ music but her last album made me obsessed! “Angels Like You” is the third track on Plastic Hearts. This electric ballad opens up a vulnerable side of Miley dealing with her patchy history of relationships. In the first verse of the song, Miley seems to recall the fond memories of being in love. And she recalls being happy when she receives the love that she deserves.
“I know that you’re wrong for me
Gonna wish we never met on the day I leave
I brought you down to your knees
‘Cause they say that misery loves company
It’s not your fault I ruin everything.”
9. Tate McRae – r u okay
I discovered rising Canadian pop singer Tate McRae when her song “you broke me first” went viral on TikTok. I started listening to her other songs on Spotify and damn, I loooove her voice! Some people say she’s a second Billie Eilish and I think I can understand were the resemble comes from. All of McRae’s releases from 2020 have been huge successes, and to continue on that legacy, she recently released the song “r u ok”.
Honestly, I could write an whole essay on how much I love the lyrics of this song. When listening to it, you can put together the story of a relationship that is clearly over and it’s over because of the man’s wrongdoing, yet he’s the one who is actively trying to manipulate his way back in. It’s a tale as old as time and Tate described it beautifully.
“Are you okay?
You’re acting like we never changed
And finally I can sleep at night
Makes you wanna lose your mind.”
10. Shawn Mendes – Dream
“Dream” is the seventh track on Shawn Mendes’s album Wonder which he released on December 4. The song is a sweet tribute to Shawn Mendes’s significant other (Camila Cabello) and always being near to her even when they are apart. According to Shawn, the overarching theme of the album is ‘freedom’ and ‘not being afraid’ to express himself.
Although I counted down the days till the release of Wonder, it isn’t my favorite Shawn album… Musically/intrumentally it’s wonderful but lyrically I expected so much more. I’m not saying the album is bad because I do have my favorite tracks like Dream, 305 and Look Up At The Starts. I guess my expectations were a little bit too high. I feel ike I’ll like it more when I’ll be able to experience it live.
“Oh, baby, when I’m apart from you
I just shut my eyes, all I have to do
Is dream about you.”
Which songs or artists did you discover at the beginning of 2021?
I have a feeling that this year will bring us a lot of new music and I can hardly wait!
Lots of love,
